FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – Cormega Copening, the quarterback for the Jack Britt High School Buccaneers, is facing five sex charges, a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office official confirmed Monday.
Copening is charged with five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. Officials said the incidents happened while he was a student at Douglas Byrd High.
During an investigation in October of last year, deputies say they found nude pictures in Copening’s cellphone and that he and his girlfriend were apparently sexting. Both are under 18.
Copening is also charged with breaking a student’s car window with a football.
Jack Britt is 2-0 on the season. Copening has played one game for the school this season, when he threw for 94 yards, one touchdown and one interception in a 26-0 win against Douglas Byrd High School on Aug. 21, according to the MaxPreps.com website.
Copening has been suspended from the team.
Copening’s next court date is scheduled for Sept. 30.
