UPDATE… 11:16 p.m…. Raleigh Police officers believe the suspect potentially linked to both shooting cases has been sighted in the Brentwood area and police confirm the suspect’s car was found in Brentwood. Community members in that area are urged to stay in their homes until further notice and to not answer their doors to anyone they do not know, police said.
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Raleigh Police swarmed to a pawn shop in a quiet strip shopping center in Raleigh Monday night after a business owner was killed in a shooting.
Police later confirmed the deadly shooting happened just after 7 p.m. at 4630 Capital Boulevard, which is the location for Mr. Pawn.
Thomas Melvin Durand, age 64, the proprietor of Mr. Pawn, the business where the crime occurred, died in the shooting, Raleigh Police said.
Just before 10 p.m., police said that they believe the suspect in the shooting got into a dark blue BMW — likely also used in a shooting earlier in the day — and drove off.
Police said that they also believe the suspect and vehicle are linked to another shooting that happened at a motel on New Bern Avenue on Monday morning.
Just after 11 p.m. Monday, police said the blue BMW 328i was found in the Brentwood area and that they are no longer looking for it.
“The similarity of the vehicle and suspect descriptions involved and other investigative information have led detectives to conclude that the same suspect may be responsible for both crimes,” according to police.
At the Mr. Pawn business where the shooting happened Monday evening, friends of the victim gathered in shock.
Friends tell WNCN that the shooting claimed the life of a man well known and loved in this community.
“We just got a call that somebody had been shot we got up here found out it was our friend Tom .. our friend Tom,” said friend Cynthia Winston.
Cynthia Winston says her friend Tom was the owner of Mr. Pawn.. his shop is right next door to the barbershop where Winston’s husband works
I’ve known Tom for 20 plus years… my husband has been the proprietor next door to him for 20 plus years so we’re very close, very close,” Winston added.
Friends and customers say they don’t know much about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, but they know they’ve lost a good person.
“I know he’s helped a lot of people out in this community,” said James Ratliffe, customer
“This really hits home and it’s really going to be a big loss not just for this shopping center but for the community around here in general,” Winston said.
In the case earlier Monday, a man was shot back at a hotel in the 3800 block of New Bern Avenue Monday morning.
Officers were called to the Knights Inn Hotel at 3804 New Bern Ave. shortly before 9 a.m in response to a shooting call.
Surveillance footage from the motel shooting showed the suspect coming up behind the victim and shooting him in the back. The suspect could then be seen taking the victim’s money, police said.
No one at the pawn shop business could be reached for comment Monday night.
Multiple Raleigh Police vehicles were on the scene and a yellow crime scene tape marked off the area.
“Additional officers and detectives have responded to the scene, and the follow-up investigation of the incident is underway,” police said in a press release.
The pawn shop is located near the Barbecue Lodge.
