BOONE, N.C. (WBTV) – A 28-year-old man is charged after police say he drove across the country in an attempt to meet a 14-year-old girl for sex.
Officials posed to be the teen who JP Thrower of Selma, OR, was planning to meet.
The detective posed on a popular social media web site and says Thrower sought them out, initiating the encounter. Thrower said he was traveling to the Boone area to visit a family member and requested to meet at a hotel in Boone on a specific date for sexual purposes.
When Thrower arrived, he was arrested by authorities.
“This individual had the forethought to seek out at least one child in North Carolina before traveling here. As a parent, this is terrifying. It is these types of crimes that can lead to missing children, human trafficking, and murder,” Chief of Police Dana Crawford said.
Thrower is charged with felony attempted first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, felony soliciting of a child by computer and felony dissemination of obscenity. He was given a $150,000 secured bond and is expected to appear in court on September 17.
Thrower also indicated that he worked on a legal marijuana farm in Oregon and had mailed a package containing marijuana to a residence in Watauga County. After conducting a search of the home, where the resident was on probation, they seized a pound of marijuana.
No charges have been filed yet for the marijuana.
