NC worker hit by woman driving SUV in US 70 work zone, officials say

WILSONS MILLS, NC (WNCN) — A Clayton woman driving an SUV ran off a highway and ended up hitting a worker in a construction zone on US 70 on Tuesday morning, officials say.

A 47-year-old man, a subcontractor for the Department of Transportation, was hit around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, NC Highway Patrol officials said.

The incident happened when a 2009 Dodge SUV, operated by Amber Nims, age 29, of Apple Court, Clayton, was traveling west on US 70 through a marked construction zone, troopers say.

At the time, construction workers were in the process of making bridge improvements on US 70 near Bear Farm Road

“Nims’ vehicle ran off onto the right shoulder, striking the guardrail. She then overcorrected causing her vehicle to travel back across the roadway where she struck a construction worker,” said Lt. Jeff Gordon with the NC Highway Patrol.

The worker was transported to Wake Medical Center with minor injuries.

Nims sustained no injuries in the collision and has been charged with Failure to Maintain Lane Control, Gordon said.
