NC man fires shots inside home, flees scene with his child, deputies say

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – A 29-year-old man was arrested after the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said he fired shots inside a home and grabbed the mother of his child by the throat until she complied with his demands.

Deputies responded to a residence on Miranda Drive after a 911 call reported Zebedee Morris Johnson, of 3838 Marksberry Drive, fired shots in the home.

Deputies saw Johnson’s black SUV on Bingham Drive and pulled him over. During that stop, deputies found a 9mm handgun in Johnson’s possession.

An investigation revealed Johnson pushed his way into the Miranda Drive residence of Brianna Mittl, the mother of his’s child.

Johnson had a gun at the time he went into the home, the sheriff’s office said.

Johnson demanded to know whose vehicle was parked in front of the residence.

He then fired a shot from inside the home, striking the vehicle parked out front.

Johnson then went to a closet and found the owner of the vehicle, Kendell Williams, hiding.

Johnson fired a shot into the closet door, the sheriff’s office said.

Mittl then refused to hand over her 1-year-old child to Johnson.

Johnson then grabbed Mittl by the throat until she complied with his demand.

Johnson left the home with the child but was taken into custody soon after.

He faces felony charges of discharging a firearm within a structure to incite fear and assault by strangulation.

He is being held with no bond for 48 hours as required by the law applicable to the domestic related assault.
