SELMA, N.C. (WNCN) – A 22-year-old Pennsylvania man running from police in Selma was hit and killed by a tractor trailer on Interstate 95 Tuesday night, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said.
Selma police attempted to pull over a burgundy 2001 Nissan pickup truck operated by Mark Malloy, of 31 Shaver Ave., Shavertown, Pennsylvania, within the city limits.
Malloy fled from Selma police and eventually drove his vehicle onto I-95.
Malloy pulled his truck onto the shoulder of I-95, exited the vehicle and took off on foot, the Highway Patrol said.
Malloy crossed the median to northbound I-95 and appeared to attempt to come back to an officer in the median when he was hit, troopers said.
A tractor trailer, operated by Antonio Oliveras, 45, of Florida, plowed into Malloy.
Oliveras described it as looking like a “game of chicken,” troopers said.
He was not injured in the collision.
Investigators do not know why Malloy ran from law enforcement.
No charges will be filed.
