DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Durham police said a teen was shot and killed during a home invasion at the Duke Manor Apartments on LaSalle Street early Thursday morning.
Officers responded to a call around 1:15 a.m. in the 300 block of LaSalle Street. Upon arrival, officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds at the apartment complex.
Antonio Lamont Elliott Jr., 18, of Durham was later identified as the person who died.
Durham police said the shooting occurred during a home invasion.
Neighbor Lezlie Sumpter said incidents such as this shooting are a common occurrence.
“It’s a nightly thing. I’ve been here six years and it’s always something. Back and forth back and forth,” Sumpter said. “I didn’t hear any fire trucks so I knew it was a shooting.”
She said, “This is just crazy.”
On Aug. 24, security guard was injured in a home invasion at the same apartments.
Police said it appears the security guard interrupted a home invasion. Residents of an apartment told officers a male armed with a gun kicked in the door of their apartment and fired a shot.
Two security guards heard the gunshot and responded to the area, Durham investigators said.
The Duke Manor apartments are surrounded by a fence and a pole gate at the front entrance. The apartments also have security guards. But some residents don’t think that’s enough.
“Anybody can come in and out, because once a car gets to the gate it opens right up,” said resident Noemy Duran.
