Durham firefighter in Triathlon to raise funds, awareness for Parkinson’s

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A City of Durham firefighter is gearing up for a challenge to help raise money and awareness for the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.

Mark Macenas has been training for five months to take part in the Wilmington YMCA Triathlon Saturday as a way to honor his father, Nicholas Macenas.

Nicholas Macenas, who Mark describes as “my hero,” was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease a few years ago.

Mark Macenas will wear full firefighter gear, including helmet and air pack, for the 5K section of the race.

“Every penny helps make a difference no matter how small or big, every dollar raised helps PDF fund the most promising science that will help solve or treat and hopefully end Parkinson’s,” Mark Marcenas said.

An estimated one million Americans are living with Parkinson’s disease, a chronic and progressive

Mark Macenas has surpassed his fundraising goal of $1,000 by $525 as of Thursday afternoon.
