FUQUAY VARINA, NC (WNCN) — A Fuquay Varina man died after major four-vehicle crash that happened in Wake County on Thursday night.
The incident happened around 8:20 p.m. at the intersection of NC 42 and Johnny Baker Road, a miles east of Fuquay Varina.
The crash involved a Jeep, a van, a passenger car and a motorcycle. There were four people transported to area hospitals, including the driver of the motorcycle.
Authorities confirmed that Michael Shane Thatcher, age 27, of Fuquay Varina, who was the driver of the motorcycle, died at the hospital as a result of the crash.
The incident was the result of a chain-reaction wreck that happened as a gray van heading east on NC 42 was waiting to make a left turn onto Johnny Baker Road, NC Troopers told WNCN.
While the van was stopped, a passenger car came behind the van and was rear-ended by a third-vehicle, a Jeep Liberty, Troopers said.
The passenger car, which had just been rear-ended, was pushed into westbound lanes of NC 42.
The driver of a truck heading west on NC 42 managed to see the crash and narrowly avoided a collision.
However, a motorcyclist behind the truck could not stop in time and crashed, sliding under the passenger car that had been pushed into on-coming traffic.
The motorcyclist was trapped under the passenger car, Troopers said.
Of the other three injuries, one person was in serious condition, troopers said.
As of 10 p.m. all the vehicles were being towed from the scene.
