RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – One person was killed and another injured in a shooting at the Brier Creek shopping center in Raleigh late Thursday night.
It happened around 10:30 p.m. outside the Wal-Mart, Raleigh Police said.
Investigators said two people were taken to Duke University Hospital in Durham. One victim died as a result of his injuries at the hospital. Police identified the deceased victim as Jerry Eugene Sumpter, 39.
The second victim has been identified as Emil Emit Sherwood, 36. Police said his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
Both men are from Durham.
It’s believed a car accident occurred before the shooting, but police have not said anything officially.
Two suspects left the scene in two different vehicles, one white and the other silver.
Detectives have not established a motive but believe the shooting was not a random act of violence.
The area is generally considered very safe, one customer told WNCN.
“I was really shocked to find out that’s what was going on at this location. This is like a really safe area. This is why we came to this store,” said Tonja Dan, who was shopping at the Wal-Mart when the shooting happened. “…At late night you can come in and shop and not worry about anything, but this kind of makes you think, you know.”
There are no suspects in custody at this time.
