WASHINGTON, D.C. (WNCT) – The government released new data on Monday that shows obesity rates stayed the same for 45 states including North Carolina.
The report puts North Carolina as having the 24th highest rate in the country. Five states had small increases.
An advocacy group called Trust for America’s Health analyzed the data.
It found that around 5 percent of children are severely obese by the time they are ages 6 to 11.
It also found that minorities had higher rates of obesity, but that is not necessarily true in North Carolina.
Across the country, obesity rates are 47.8 percent for African Americans (40 percent in North Carolina); 42.5 percent for Latinos (29.7 percent in North Carolina); and 32.6 percent for Whites (26.8 percent in North Carolina).
