DINWIDDIE, Va. (AP) – Virginia State Police say a trooper responding to a fatal crash died when his patrol vehicle ran off an Interstate 295 ramp and overturned.
State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the accidents occurred Monday morning. The names of the victims were being withheld until relatives could be notified.
Police say that shortly after 7 a.m., a 2004 Dodge pickup truck traveling east on U.S. 460 in Dinwiddie County ran off the highway and hit a guardrail. The driver was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center, where he died.
While responding to assist, a trooper took the I-295 exit ramp to Interstate 95 north in Prince George County. After flipping onto its side, the vehicle hit several trees. The trooper was flown to VCU Medical Center, where he died.
