SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WBTW) – A former teacher in Spartanburg was sentenced to three years probation on an assault and battery charge after being accused of inappropriately touching one of her students.
A judge sentenced Courtney Kay to five years suspended to three years probation on Wednesday morning. She was arrested in 2013.
According to previous reports, Kay was a teacher at Spartanburg High School Freshman Academy until she was arrested in February of 2013.
Kay was going to plead guilty to assault and battery in July of 2015, but the victim’s family made a statement that accused her of having relationships with students at other schools. The defense then talked to the judge and withdrew the guilty plea back in the summer.
In addition to the probation sentence on the assault and battery charge handed down on Wednesday, the judge did not make a decision on whether Kay’s name would be placed on the sex offender registry.
The judge said he would review a couple of reports before making the decision.
