GODWIN, N.C. (WNCN) – The State Highway Patrol is investigating after a woman was killed and another person was injured when a tree fell across the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Godwin in Cumberland County Thursday afternoon. The incident may be weather-related, authorities said.
A tree fell across the roadway striking two vehicles. The passenger in one of the vehicles was killed and the driver was injured. The driver was taken to Cape Fear Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was not injured.
All southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near mile marker 67 were shut down after the incident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. The lanes reopened just after 4:15 p.m.
The names of those involved are not being released until next of kin is notified.
