More than $50,000 seized after 4 Johnston Co. alcohol, gambling and drug locations raided

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – State Alcohol Law Enforcement agents and Johnston County Sheriff’s Office deputies served four search warrants at locations operating illegal video gaming machines on Wednesday, authorities said.

A search of Meadow Novelty, located at 5350 North Carolina Highway 50 South in Benson resulted in William D. Johnson Jr., 64, being charged with three counts of gambling, three counts of possession of an illegal slot machine, three counts of operating an illegal slot machine, and possession of counterfeit goods.

Five illegal video gambling machines, counterfeit goods and nearly $4,700 were seized.

A second search was conducted at a residence located at 47 Tarheel Road in Benson where Gregory K. Dorsey, 45, was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of mushrooms, possession of methamphetamine, maintaining a dwelling for the use of drugs, manufacture controlled substances, possession with intent to sell marijuana, possession of dextroamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

ALE agents also charged Dorsey with possession of non-tax paid alcohol and nine counts of various gambling charges related to illegal video gaming machines. Crystal L. Dorsey, 39, was also charged with possession of non-tax paid alcohol and various gambling offenses.

The search resulted in the seizure of cocaine, mushrooms, methamphetamine, marijuana, other controlled substances, firearms, five video gaming machines and more than $11,400.

“Yesterday’s investigation is a good example of the working relationship between deputies from the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and ALE,” Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell said Thursday. “This partnership and the hard work that went into this investigation ensures safer communities in our county.”

A third search was conducted by ALE agents at a residence located at 1372 George Perry Lee Road in Dunn. Graylon McLamb, 70, was charged with nine counts of various gambling charges related to video gaming machines, possession of non-tax paid alcohol, possession of equipment for an illegal distillery, and possession of alcoholic beverages for sale without an ABC permit. Doris A. McLamb, 72, was also charged with various gambling offenses.

The search resulted in the seizure of nine video gaming machines, non-tax paid alcohol, parts for a liquor still, 263 gallons of mash and nearly $38,000.

The fourth search was conducted by ALE agents at a residence located at 9 Daddy Lane in Dunn. Ricky J. Barefoot, 61, and Edna P. Barefoot, 62, were charged with nine gambling charges related to video gaming machines and possession of non-taxpaid alcohol. Christopher Barefoot, age 21, was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The search at 9 Daddy Lane resulted in the seizure of 10 video gaming machines, non-tax paid alcohol, and marijuana.

“Locations such as these generate significant complaints from the community and removing these illegal venues is a goal for ALE,” ALE special agent Jeff Lasater said. “Illegal gambling often attracts other activities such as drugs and illegal alcohol. Our goal is to eliminate these places in an effort to make our community a safer place.”
