The incident was reported around 2:15 p.m. at North Iredell High School on Raider Road in Olin. Multiple agencies were called to the scene. Firefighters said a large box truck ran into a pre-cast concrete canopy at the school during a band competition, and that some students were trapped.

“I was standing towards the building and I heard it snap,” witness Richard Campbell told WBTV, “And I ran out towards the grass and I saw people trapped underneath there.”

Firefighters said via Twitter that 20 children were reportedly “under the collapse zone.” They said just a short time later that all victims were free.

“It took a while to lift the rubble off of them, remove the ruble off of them, because some of them were deep under it,” another witness said.

According to officials, 25 people were taken to area hospitals. Iredell County EMS said the injuries ranged from minor to life threatening, and sources said that “all on duty and off duty paramedics” were called to the scene.

Stephanie White’s daughter was at the school at the time, but said she was okay.

“I was scared when I found out that had collapsed,” White said. “I was scared and all I wanted to do was find her, and I was really relieved.”

The names and ages of those injured have not been released.

According to the school’s website, SATs and the band competition were both happening today at the high school.

Three injuries were considered serious or life-threatening, WXII-TV reported. Three students were transported as “code red,” the Statesville Record & Landmark reported.

One student told the newspaper that “There was a lot of blood” at the scene.
