DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Durham Police have released the name of a man who apparently shot himself Tuesday morning near the Durham Police headquarters.
The shooting happened at approximately 11 a.m. on Gordon Street, police said.
A deceased male, Jeremy Darnell Artis, 21, of Marietta, Georgia, was found at the scene with what police believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez said the man had run away from an accident that took place on Vickers Avenue. Lopez said the vehicle came into the Durham Police Headquarters parking lot over a small barrier and an individual ran from the vehicle and ended up on Gordon Street where he shot himself.
Lopez said the individual was not being chased and officers were not involved in the shooting. He said the fact that the incident occurred near police headquarters was a coincidence.
Police said in a news release that Artis jumped out of the car and a female remained in the car. Officers chased after Artis, who shot himself in the head.
Vickers Avenue was closed between Chapel Hill Street and Jackson Street.
