Train strikes, kills man near NC State campus, police say

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Raleigh police said a man was killed Tuesday afternoon when he was hit by a train near the N.C. State campus.


Police responded to the call around 3:20 p.m. near 621 Motor Pool Street. The man was hit on the tracks somewhere between Sullivan Hall and the Gorman Street Bridge.

Raleigh police said the victim was Maurice Sutton, 51, of Raleigh. Sutton was not affiliated with the University.

Amtrak confirmed Train 74 hit the man as it traveled between Charlotte and Raleigh.

There were 24 passengers on the train. No injuries were reported to passengers or crew, Amtrak said.

N.C. State police said there is no pedestrian access where the incident occurred.
