TRENTON, N.C. (WNCT) – Supporters of 7-year-old Alex Lockhart gathered at Jones Senior High School to show support and see Alex get enlisted in the United States Army.
Alex has stage 4 rhabdomyosarcoma cancer, loves Harley Davidson and has dreams of being a soldier in the Army. His dream came true Saturday as he was inducted into the U.S. Army as an honorary soldier.
Alex’s father, Dustin Pike, says parents from Trenton Elementary School decided to put this event on for their family. He says they make several trips back to forth to Chapel Hill for chemotherapy and doctors’ appointments and it’s getting tough to afford.
“I didn’t ever think someone would do that, and they have and it’s just a great feeling,” explained Pike.
Pike says he even had to quit working because he needs to care for his son. He and Alex’s mother plan to move to Chapel Hill to make life easier.
“Our life took a big turn; we can’t do the same things that we use to. It took a big turn but it’s made us all stronger.”
The event for Alex this afternoon sold T-shirts, cookies and even had vendors giving a portion of their proceeds back to Alex. Alex’s grandma, Lisa Pike, moved from Pennsylvania back to North Carolina just to help with Alex’s care.
“If anyone’s going to make it, it will be Alex. He’s very loving and very good, and adventurous,” said Lisa Pike.
She says seeing what he goes through is tough, but she hopes people will donate to make his life and his parents easier.
