RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Republican Congresswoman Renee Ellmers is addressing a controversy that has been circulating in Washington for quite some time.
It centers on rumors that she had an inappropriate relationship with House Majority leader Kevin McCarthy.
McCarthy bowed out of the race to become the next Speaker of the House.
In a statement sent to WNCN, Ellmers said, “As someone who has been targeted by completely false accusations and innuendo, I have been moved by the outpouring of support and prayers from my colleagues, constituents and friends.
“Now I will be praying for those who find it acceptable to bear false witness.”
Ellmers represents North Carolina’s 2nd District and defeated Democrat Clay Aiken in the most recent primary.
Steve Baer, a conservative donor from Chicago, sent many GOP lawmakers emails claiming Ellmers had a romantic relationship with McCarthy, Politico reported.
On Friday, Ellmers thanks Republican lawmakers for their “prayers and support,” Politico said.
Ellmers is married to Brent Ellmers, a surgeon, and they have a son.
