DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – The pedestrian killed Tuesday in Durham was a 25-year-old man named Justin Radtke of Durham.

The incident happened just after 3 a.m. Tuesday in the area of U.S. Highway 15-501 near Cornwallis Road, police said.

A call to 911 reported that a man was running into traffic before the accident occurred. A street sweeper going southbound on U.S. 15-501 just south of the N.C. 751 exit hit Radtke when he ran out from the median into the travel lane, according to investigators.

The accident remains under investigation, but there are no pending charges at this time.

Ann Donovan, vice president of sweeping operations at Carolina Sweepers, said the company is cooperating with police and also conducting an internal investigation.

The southbound lanes of U.S. 15-501 between the N.C. 751 and Cornwallis Road exits were shut down for more than two hours.
