LOUISBURG, N.C. (WNCN) – Novant Health said it is trying to stabilize patients and move them from Franklin County’s only hospital before it closes Friday.
The next closest hospital is 21 miles away.
In total, 140 employees will lose their jobs once Frankling Medical Center Closes.
“It’s hard, you know. What do you say about that?” said ultrasound technician Ayanna Gregory. “People are running around trying to find jobs and be able to have health insurance for their kids and their families. A roof over their head, to be able to put food on the tables for their families.”
Last week Novant Health announced the hositpal would close due to declining utilization.
That announcement gave staff and this community just nine days’ notice.
According to the latest census, more than 62,000 people live in Franklin County and those people will not have a hospital.
Grady Curtis’ sister was rushed to this emergency room just yesterday.
But he tells me she won’t be here long.
“I was just glad it was here. So I could get her here and get her help,” Curtis said. “They’re going to have to transfer her to another hospital once they get her status where she can come around and talk.”
Employees will receive at least 60 days of pay and benefits and will have assistance from from the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Novant said in a release.
