DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A Durham business owner announced Friday he is running for the U.S. Senate as a Democrat.
Kevin Griffin is president and CEO of Avant Group, a company he founded in 2002.
In a news release, Griffin said he is a North Carolina native and UNC-Greensboro graduate. He said he plans to crisscross the state to meet people and listen to their needs.
“Today I will begin my run for the U.S. Senate. I am excited to talk to the people of our state to hear what their concerns and needs are, as well as their hopes for the future,” Griffin said.
Griffin is running for the seat held by Richard Burr, a Republican. Also in the Democratic field are former Wake County legislator Deborah Ross and Spring Lake mayor Chris Rey.
Avant is a staffing company in Durham serving the Triangle and Triad. In a news release, Griffin said Avant has placed almost 2,000 North Carolina residents in jobs over the past 13 years.
“When you’re providing a great education and opportunities for successful, rewarding employment, you are helping to develop the next generation,” Griffin said. “As we strengthen our educational experience and give people the tools to find employment, and to improve their lives, they develop self-confidence and self-worth, and an appreciation of their value. When we have an active and engaged population, one that knows its voice is meaningful and should be heard, then we can work together to solve the social, scientific, and financial problems in the country.”
