CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora said a freshman cornerback who had been suspended indefinitely has been reinstated to the team.
Mike Hughes was charged with one count misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury following an Oct. 4 incident at a Chapel Hill frat house, police said.
“I’ve reinstated Mike Hughes today and he will play against Virginia this week,” Fedora said Wednesday.
Sophomore cornerback M.J. Stewart will return after the Virginia game, Fedora confirmed.
Stewart was charged with count misdemeanor assault and battery from the same incident.
Both players were suspended indefinitely last week and missed the Tar Heels’ game against Wake Forest Oct. 17.
“M.J. Stewart will be reinstated on Sunday and play against Pitt the next week. Based on everything I know at this time, it was the appropriate action. They still have to go through the judicial process,” Fedora said.
Stewart is scheduled to appear in court Thursday. Hughes has a scheduled court appearance for Nov. 19.
