Sanford teen charged after handgun found in vehicle on school campus

SANFORD, NC (WNCN) — A Sanford teen was arrested and suspended after school officials found a handgun and knife in his vehicle on campus, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said.

The teen was arrested on Friday at Lee County High School in Sanford around 11:05 a.m., deputies say.

Jacob Overton Gunter, age 16, of Burgess Circle in Sanford was charged after the school’s principal searched Gunter’s vehicle about a separate issue, according to deputies.

A .22 caliber handgun was found in the vehicle along with a wooden handle straight blade knife, deputies said.

Gunter was charged with possessing a firearm on school grounds, possessing a knife on school grounds and possessing a firearm by a minor.

Gunter was suspended from school for a year, his mother told WNCN.

He was held under $5,000 secured bond.
