WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (NBC News) – One student was killed and another was injured in a shooting at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina, the school said early Sunday.
The university said the campus was placed on full lockdown after a shooting was reported at around 1:20 a.m. The lockdown was lifted and an all-clear was given just over three hours later.
“We can confirm that there has been one fatality and one injured individual,” Winston-Salem University said in a statement.
The person killed has been identified as Anthony White, Jr., 19, of Charlotte, according to NBC affiliate WXII. The station reported that the shooting occurred near a parking lot near Wilson Hall and Gleason-Hairston Terrace. Both buildings are residence halls.
White was a second-year student at the university, officials told WXII.
The injured student was released from the hospital and officials haven’t released that student’s name.
School officials identified the suspect as Jarrett Jerome Moore, WXII reported. Moore is not in custody and is not believed to be a current student, according to officials.
Counseling services will be available to students on Sunday, according to the university.
