Church volunteer killed while riding bike near Fuquay-Varina

FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. (WNCN) – A bicyclist was killed in a collision with a car in Wake County Tuesday night, Highway Patrol confirmed.

Lee William Morel, 33, of Willow Springs, was hit while riding a bicycle around 7 p.m. on Mount Pleasant Church Road, about five miles east of Fuquay-Varina.

William Clyde Denton Jr., 44, was driving a 2006 Ford F-150 pick-up he hit Morel.

Morel was struck from behind and ejected from his bicycle, the Highway Patrol said.

Morel died from his injuries later at WakeMed, authorities confirmed.

Morel’s father said his son volunteered throughout the community, including his church, Mount Pleasant Presbyterian.

“He wanted to be independent. The church was good for him,” Charles Morel said “He’s up there with Jesus.”

Morel’s family said Lee Morel’s organs will be donated.

Funeral arrangements have not been made.

An investigation into the incident is still ongoing. Investigators will work with the Wake County District Attorney’s Office as to possible charges once the investigation is complete.
