STANLEY, N.C. (WBTV) – A Lincoln County man was arrested after deputies say he failed to care for his disabled and elderly wife, leading to her death.
Bobby Dean Armstrong, 72, was arrested and charged with one felony count of neglect of a disabled/elderly person with serious injury.
The investigation began on Sept. 18, when Armstrong went to the Lincoln County EMS base requesting help for his wife, 72-year-old Janet Groner Armstrong. EMS then went to the home on the 7600 block of Sifford Road in Stanley.
Deputies said the wife had been bedridden for about nine months. According to the report, she was forced to lie in her own excrement, had bed sores on her body and had a “deep open leg wound that was covered with maggots.”
The report states the injuries were not from physical abuse, but from “a lack of medical attention and caregiving by the woman’s husband.”
Janet Armstrong was taken to Presbyterian Huntersville before being transferred to Charlotte, where she passed away the next day.
“In my 25 years in law enforcement this is the worst case of neglect I have ever seen,” said Detective Captain Tim Johnson. “The conditions this person was living in were deplorable at best.”
Armstrong was arrested at the Stanley County Total Living Center and placed under a $100,000 bond. He was scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
