NC inmate tried to impersonate cellmate to escape, police say

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – A man in custody for charges related to drugs and identity theft attempted to impersonate his cellmate Sunday, police said.

Lt. Jerry Brewer said when Montrille Dailey’s sleeping cellmate was called to be bailed out, Dailey attempted to impersonate him. Brewer said jail staff discovered the fraud when Dailey went to the booking desk.

His initial charges included:

    • Trafficking in opium or heroin (two counts)
    • Identity theft
    • Possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver a schedule I controlled substance
    • Conspiracy to sell or deliver a schedule I controlled substance
    • His initial bond was $1.5 million.
