RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A 34-year-old man was killed in a crash at the intersection of Edwards Mill Road and Glen Eden Drive in Raleigh Friday morning, police said.
The two-vehicle crash occurred just after 7:30 a.m. The driver of a pickup truck, Russell Winneberger, 49, of Raleigh, crossed the center line while heading south on Edwards Mill Road and slammed into a car driven by Vikram Nair, 34, of Morrisville, according to a wreck report released by Raleigh Police.
Both were estimated to be driving at the posted speed limit of 45 mph.
Emergency crews had to cut the top off of Nair’s vehicle in order to get him out. Both vehicles suffered extensive damage.
Nair was pronounced dead at the scene.
One passerby, Bella Burniston, told WNCN she was shocked by what she witnessed.
“I was just out here doing my morning walk, and I was utterly surprised and aghast at what I saw. I have never seen anything as catastrophic,” she said.
Speed was not a factor, and results of a drug and alcohol test performed on Winneberger are pending. He has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
The wreck closed both northbound lanes and one southbound lane of Edwards Mill Road, but the lanes have since reopened.
