ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. (WNCN) – A man was arrested in Roanoke Rapids Friday night after multiple guns and drugs were found in his car during a traffic stop, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said.
The traffic stop occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. in the area of U.S. Route 158 and Huckleberry Bottom Road when Derek Lee Whitake, 34, of Roanoke Rapids, was stopped for a speeding violation.
Whitaker told the deputy that he had a handgun inside the vehicle. In addition to the handgun, 128 grams of crack cocaine, marijuana and a rifle were also found.
Whitaker was arrested and charged with speeding, trafficking cocaine, possession with the intent to sell or deliver cocaine, felony possession of cocaine, maintaining a vehicle/dwelling for a controlled substance, carrying a concealed weapon and possessing marijuana up to one-half ounce.
Whitaker was given a $50,000 secured bond and is being held at the Halifax County Detention Center.
The street value of the cocaine is approximately $7,700.
Whitaker’s first court date is scheduled for Dec. 2.
