WINNABOW, N.C. (WECT) – The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has charged two Bolivia, North Carolina men for stealing Venus flytraps Saturday night.

Scottie Stevenson, 44, and David Lewis, 23, were charged with one count of taking Venus flytrap, 149 counts of taking certain wild plants from land and one count of second-degree trespassing.

Reportedly, the pair stole 1,025 Venus flytraps and Pitcher plants from Orton Plantation.

Authorities made the arrests after a Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office K9 discovered the plants in their backpacks.

Orton Plantation refused to comment.

Park Ranger Carla Edwards said stealing Venus flytraps is a serious crime.

“Its popularity worldwide has created a market,” Edwards said. “People dig them up and sell them on the black market. They can profit from it.”

Edwards said the plants are popular in some countries as pets. She said poachers typically make 25 to 30 cents per plant.

Both men are being held under a $1 million bond.
