CLAYTON, N.C. (WNCN) – A gas leak as closed N.C. Highway 42 eastbound Monday between Glen Laurel and Castleberry roads, authorities confirmed.
The roadway is not expected to reopen before 2 a.m. on Tuesday morning, officials said.
A Duke Energy contractor hit an eight-inch line causing the leak just after 12 p.m. The leak was finally shut around 10 p.m., but the road will stay closed until 2 a.m.
Crews from Piedmont Natural Gas are working to repair the leak but it is doubtful N.C. 42 will reopen before rush hour, said Stacy Beard, Clayton spokeswoman.
Residents who live in Fox Ridge or Woodbury will be able to return home but may be required to prove residence.
There are no evacuations with the gas leak, Beard said.
