COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Orangeburg County deputies say a traffic stop involving a West Columbia couple and a child ended with the discovery of a veritable smorgasbord of drugs hidden throughout the car.
Deputies arrested Yulaimis Garcia, 26, and Andres Rodriguez on charges of unlawful neglect of a child. Rodriguez was also charged with trafficking heroin.
Investigators said the couple were pulled over for speeding on Interstate 26 on Wednesday at 5 a.m. The deputy said he smelled marijuana in the car and immediately asked the driver where the drug was located. The driver, according to officials, admitted there was a “little bit” inside the car.
However, when asked if there were more drugs inside the car, Garcia said, “Just look and you’ll figure it out.”
An initial check inside the car found the marijuana in question and 14 grams of heroin. A further, more in-depth search found even more marijuana, two bags of cocaine, and $2,200 in cash hidden throughout the car.
“These two were stopped here in Orangeburg while they were driving through from Florida,” Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said in a statement. “They have no ties to this community, but we were able to effect an arrest and take a substantial amount of narcotics off the streets.”
The Department of Social Services has been notified of the child.
