MORRISVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – Nearly 250,000 people are expected to pass through Raleigh-Durham International Airport over the holiday weekend.
RDU says Tuesday at noon is the start of its busy Thanksgiving holiday travel period. RDU expects a 5 percent increase in travelers this year compared to last year.
On a normal day, 15,000 to 20,000 people pass through RDU. On a holiday weekend, it’s closer to 30,000.
Travelers are encouraged to arrive at the airport early and they should expect security to be tighter due to recent events.
“Following Sept. 11, the federal government did put in rules for airports to follow regarding security. Of course those are things we don’t talk about, but there are seen and unseen security elements that are in place,” said Mindy Hamlin, RDU spokeswoman.
The airport also recommends checking your flight status before you come to the airport as weather could cause delays.
