2 workers die, 1 critical after incident at transformer plant in Goldsboro

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — Two people died on Monday during an industrial incident at a transformer plant in Wayne County, authorities say.

The incident happened at SPX Transformer Solutions Inc. at 2701 U.S. Highway 117 in Goldsboro around 6 p.m., the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said.

The incident was first discovered when a worker who was performing tasks in a very large transformer was found unresponsive.

Then, two more workers entered the transformer to help, but those two workers then became unresponsive, the sheriff’s office said.

Two of the three workers died and another was taken to a nearby hospital.

The two deceased workers have been identified as Dennis Martin, 51, of Goldsboro, and Daniel Craig Anderson, 33, of Dudley. The injured worker has been identified as William Saviak, 40, of Dudley.

Saviak is in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro.

It’s not clear what caused the workers to die, officials say. The incident is under investigation.
