CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A 19-year-old showed up at a north Charlotte hospital after being shot less than three miles from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, according to police.
The incident happened just after 4 p.m. on the 800 block of Pavilion Boulevard, which is about 2.5 miles from the campus. Police said the victim, later identified as Dejanae Gilliam, showed up at Carolinas Medical Center-University with an apparent gunshot wound.
Officers said the shooting appears to have stemmed from a road rage incident that occurred at Pavilion Blvd and Highway 49, and was in no way related to the university.
Officers said Gilliam suffered serious injuries and was listed as being in critical condition, Tuesday morning.
Some residents of nearby apartment complex 901 Place said they hear the gunshots, and they’re not surprised to hear about the trouble in the area.
“When we heard four gunshots, we walked out to our balcony and saw other residents walking out to kind of hearing what happened,” said Kaelyn Montoya. “I live near the door and I’m terrified at night going to sleep. If I hear yelling or banging or gunshots – that alarms me, that scares me – because I have no idea what’s going on.”
No one has been taken into custody in connection to the incident.
