Raleigh’s Clemons turning heads on the court at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (WNCN) – Campbell freshman point guard Chris Clemons is fine with his stature.

“I like my height,” Clemons asserted. “I like who I am.”

At 5 feet 9 inches, the dynamic speedster is by no means tall, but then again.

“Great things are in small packages,” said Millbrook head basketball coach Scott McInnes. “And that’s definitely Chris.”

Which makes you wonder, what if Clemons was just average height for a basketball player.

“If he were 6-foot-5 he’d be certainly a one-and-done,” said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan.

But there’s no need to feel sorry for Clemons. He seems to be doing just fine with what he’s got.

“It’s more about heart for me you know, having the heart and will to win,” explained Clemons.

Clemons is already making an impact as a freshman at Campbell. He leads the Camels in scoring and steals.

“He’s probably one of the best freshmen, he’s going to end up being one of the best in the nation,” said McGeehan.

Clemons played his high school ball at Millbrook High School in Raleigh where he was named conference player of the year.

He set the Wildcats single game and season scoring marks while leading the school to back to back deep playoff runs his final two seasons there.

But more than anything, Clemons was known for his clutch play late in games.

“Chris just has that uncanny ability to knock down huge shots,” said McInnes.

That knack was on full display Monday night when Clemons hit a timely three pointer with less than a minute to go as the Camels battled back to take the lead after trailing VMI by 18 points.

“I think there is something about him that has an ability to rise to the occasion or the moment,” admitted McGeehan.

But Clemons was not done yet.

Moments later, he would hit another three pointer, this one the game winner with less than three seconds left in the game.

“That’s really a shot I’ve taken a lot and made a lot,” Clemons said. “It’s paid off.”

Proving you don’t have to be a certain height to be successful.

“It’s exciting being this height doing the things I do and I don’t think it’d be the same if I was tall,” Clemons asserted.

Spoken like someone who is more than comfortable in his own skin.
