The Wake County Board of Commissioners elected James West as Chairman and Sig Hutchinson as Vice Chairman at the regular board meeting on Monday.
They will serve for a one-year term, effective immediately.
West presides over all meetings. He also has the authority to call special meetings of the board and declare states of emergency in accordance with state laws. West is currently serving his second term as a Wake County commissioner representing District 5, and this marks his second time serving as board chairman.
Prior to assuming his leadership role as a county commissioner, he served on the Raleigh City Council for 11 years, most notably as mayor pro tem from 2003-2010.
Hutchinson’s role as vice chairman includes fulfilling his standard duties as an elected official, but he will also be called upon to manage the duties of the chairman in the event of his absence. He is serving his first term as a Wake County commissioner representing District 1.
Before his election to the county board in 2014, Hutchinson served as chair of the Wake County Open Space and Parks Advisory Committee, vice chair of the Triangle Land Conservancy and a commissioner on the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Commission for the City of Raleigh.
