CLAYTON, N.C. (WNCN) — Clayton Police are still looking for the driver of a silver Jeep Cherokee who slammed through the front of a Clayton business on Hwy 70 on Friday night.
The incident happened just before 10 p.m. Friday when the Cherokee came speeding off Hwy 70 into the parking lot of the Handi Mart in Clayton at 10419 US Highway 70 West, police said
The SUV jumped the cement blocks at the edge of the building and slammed into the front of the convenience store. The force from the crash pushed the front door of the Handi Mart wide open and the SUV was lifted onto 2 side wheels upon impact.
The driver immediately backed up and sped away from the scene through the parking lot of the adjacent McCall’s restaurant, Clayton Police say.
The SUV knocked out the front wall and window of the business and destroyed items inside on the shelf across from the front wall, according to images from Clayton Police.
“While officers searched the nearby area for the signs of the damaged vehicle, they still can not locate the suspect or his SUV,” said Stacy Beard, spokeswoman for Clayton.
Video footage of the incident did not show the license plate on the Cherokee.
If anyone saw anything on Friday night, recognizes the driver or the Cherokee in the video, please call Clayton Police at 919-553-4611 or CrimeStoppers at 919-359-TIPZ (8479).
