BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Sheriff John Ingram is taking to social media to warn residents of Brunswick County to look out for a jury duty summons scam.

The scam started in the Midwest, according to an article by Better Business Bureau that Sheriff Ingram posted Tuesday.

Scammers are using jury duty as a way to grab victims’ attentions. The article said people are getting fake notices to appear in court.

The goal of this scam is to get people to click the “can be found here” link and give up personal information or so a virus can be installed.

Ingram says if you get a suspicious call or email, contact your local authorities and do not give out personal information.
