WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 17-year-old Laney High School student on several felony charges.
Deputies were called to Laney High School Thursday just after noon to respond to reports that three students were smoking marijuana in the parking lot. Soon after, a fourth student was brought into the investigation.
Deputies searched the vehicle of John Leslie King, 17.
According to Lt. Jerry Brewer, they found marijuana along with a 12-gauge shotgun, a knife, a hatchet and pills. School Resource Officers arrested King for the weapons and drug charges.
The other three students involved were placed into the diversionary program to receive discipline by the school.
Dr. Rick Holliday, Assistant Superintendent of New Hanover County Schools, said the school was not placed on lockdown when the gun was found because there was no threat to students or staff.
“We did not get a threat that there was a gun on campus because we already had it,” Holliday said.
