WAKE FOREST, N.C. (WNCN) – Wake Forest star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence announced Monday he will play college football at Clemson, giving the Tigers a major recruiting boost and continuing the in-ability of North Carolina schools to keep top talent in-state.
Lawrence is the No. 4 player in the country, according to Scout.com. Lawrence already has the size for college football at 6 foot 5 and 330 pounds and has uncommon quickness for a player that big.
Lawrence had recently visited Alabama Dec. 5 and wrapped up his recruiting with a visit to N.C. State Dec. 12.
Lawrence’s finalists were Alabama, Clemson, Florida, N.C. State, North Carolina and Ohio State.
While Lawrence at least considered two of the state’s schools, his decision continues a long tradition of elite prospects leaving.
Of the top 15 North Carolina prospects, according to 247sports.com, only two have committed to in-state schools – and none in the top 10 has committed to a school in state.
