Lower gas prices spur NC motorists during holiday season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — AAA Carolinas says falling gas prices will put more North Carolinians on the road for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

The auto club says 2,980,500 people will travel 50 miles or more for the holidays. That represents an increase of 41,000 over last year.

The 12-day Christmas-New Year’s travel holiday runs from Wednesday, Dec. 23, through Sunday, Jan. 3.

Those people driving to their destinations will find the lowest gas prices in seven years. North Carolinians are currently paying 53 cents less for a gallon of gas than they were a year ago. The statewide average is currently $1.97, with the cheapest gas in the state found in Fayetteville and Winston-Salem at an average of $1.96 a gallon. Asheville has the most expensive gas at $2.06 a gallon.
