PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) – Prosecutors this week accused a babysitter of taking a girl, 4, panhandling because the babysitter knew she would make more money if people saw a child in need.
Danielle Ana Sanchez, 19, appeared in Multnomah County Circuit Court on Friday after being charged with one count of first-degree criminal mistreatment.
Deputy District Attorney Amber Kinney writes in court documents that officers responded to a grocery store in the 4400 block of Northeast Hancock St. to check on a woman and child who were reported to be inside the grocery store asking for food and money.
Kinney writes that officers arrived and found the child’s shoes were soaked and that she was dragging a wet coat along the floor that was leaving behind a streak on the floor. Officers learned that an employee had purchased a sandwich for the child and a hamburger for Sanchez.
The child’s biological mother told police that she was unaware Sanchez was using the child to panhandle.
