FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. (WNCN) — A Wake County man was hit by a car while walking his dog near Fuquay-Varina late Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened at 5:52 p.m. on Bentwillow Drive (State Road 4725) in the West Oaks Subdivision off Johnson Pond Road near Fuquay Varina, said Lt. Jeff Gordon of the NC Highway Patrol.

William Stacy Culpepper, age 48, of the 3200 block of Bentwillow Drive, was walking his dog in the road on Bentwillow Drive when he and his dog were struck from behind by a 2000 Honda Civic driven by an 18-year-old man who also lives on Bentwillow Drive, Gordon said.

Culpepper was accompanied by his 8 year old niece, who was not hit, Gordon said.

“Culpepper was walking in a dark portion of the subdivision wearing dark clothing at the time of the collision,” Gordon said.

Culpepper was transported to Wake Medical Center with serious injuries. His dog was taken by family members to a local vet hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Honda was not hurt.

No charges have been filed at this time as investigators continue their investigation, Gordon said.
