SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (WNCN) – A 25-year-old Southern Pines man has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of 21-year-old man Christmas Eve.
Dayton Devauen Knight has been charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, probation violation and trespassing in connection with the death of Jocquis Alston.
Southern Pines officials were called to 194 Murray Hill Road at the Timberlane Apartments after reports of shots being fired and a person possibly being injured.
After arriving on the scene, authorities found Alston who had reportedly been shot, The Aberdeen Times reported. The victim was declared deceased at the scene. Alston’s birthday was just three days earlier on Dec. 21.
Numerous law enforcement officers responded to assist Southern Pines Police in response to a growing crowd around the incident location.
Knight is being held at the Moore County Detention Facility without bond, officials said.
