RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) –  A man driving a minivan slammed into a Wake County Sheriff’s Deputy early Friday morning, and the Highway Patrol charged the driver with driving while impaired.

Carlos Alberto Moya, 56, of Fountain Drive in Raleigh was traveling east on Poole Road. Deputy Joseph Samuel Coley, 44, saw Moya approaching and saw Moya’s minivan cross the center line.

Coley slowed down and turned on his blue lights and tried to avoid Moya, but Moya slammed into him head on.

The crash happened near the intersection of Poole Road and Grasshopper Road at 6:12 a.m.

Moya and Coley were both taken to WakeMed but Coley has been released.

Moya had previously been charged with DWI twice, according to records.
