DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Traffic westbound on I-40 was down to a crawl Friday afternoon after a McDonald’s truck caught fire on the side of the road.
A WNCN viewer sent a picture of the vehicle, with smoke pouring out of it. The picture showed flames coming and a huge plume of smoke arching into the sky.
Officials said the driver said the engine overheated about a mile before he stopped near the Southpoint exit and it took him some time to get the truck to the side of the road. By the time stopped, he told a fire captain, he could feel the heat on his legs.
Most cars had moved to the far left lane to try to get around the burning vehicle.
Traffic was still slowed for a couple of miles as of 3:30 p.m.
