WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Highway Patrol officials say a police chase triggered a huge accident on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington Wednesday afternoon.
According to First Sgt. Troy Pope with the Highway Patrol, a dark green car was trying to elude law enforcement at the time of the crash, which happened in the 2300 block of Carolina Beach Road just before 2:30 p.m.
Pope says the driver of the car lost control and struck a minivan in the parking lot of Advance Auto. He said the 4 or 5 suspects inside the car were taken to the hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries. Pope added that drugs and weapons were recovered from the car.
The driver of the minivan wasn’t injured in the crash.
The right, southbound lane on Carolina Beach Road, near Southern Boulevard, remains closed to traffic as police and emergency crews work to clear the scene.
The northbound lanes of Carolina Beach Road are open to traffic, but are slow moving at this time.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible.
